Champions Youth Cup: On, Off, On, Off
While our “defector suspect” Dato made annoucment earlier this week that the Youth and Sports Ministry has no problem with CYC being held…Gifted obviously had other plans in mind:
CYC: GIFTED GROUP: TOURNAMENT IS OFF
AS far as organisers Gifted Group is concerned, the Champions Youth Cup (CYC) is definitely off and all competing teams in the Aug 2-16 tournament have been informed.
“We advised the Ministry of Youth & Sports that we regarded their conduct as a repudiation of the Champions Youth Cup and that we had elected to accept their repudiation and to treat the Agreement as terminated,” Gifted Group said in a statement.
“We advised the Ministry that we held them liable for all damages and losses incurred and referred the matter to arbitration as set out in the Agreement.”
The statement added that there was no possibility for the tournament to take place and the participating teams have been advised of its cancellation.
On Monday Sports Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob (pic) said that the tournament can go on provided Gifted Group obtained sanction from the FA of Malaysia.
A total of RM14 million is believed to have already been paid by the ministry to Gifted Group for the RM17 million event. Another scheduled payment which was suppose to be made on June 1 was stopped when the whole problem started.
Gifted Group also said in its statement that recent statements attributed to the Minister for Youth and Sports concerning the tournament are inaccurate. But it had no intention of litigating via the media and will take its position in arbitration. (NST 3rd July 2008)
Are we going to be embroiled in a million dollars suit? No wonder Penang’s not getting the goodies promised by Old Man Lah under RMK9 or at least give us the monies for something else. Preparing for very stormy days?
